Virulence and Reproduction of Entomopathogenic Nematodes Isolated from a Single Mexican Locality1

چکیده

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are important biological control agents of insect pests. Strains or isolates obtained in specific regions and utilized situ might contribute to the success EPNs, since they adapted local abiotic conditions. We isolated identified three each Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) from soils at Saltillo, Coahuila State, Mexico. These six were bioassayed against larvae Tenebrio molitor L., using concentrations infective juveniles (IJs) per larva (0, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200). EPN-induced mortality ranged 15.2% 100%. The designated M5 isolate S. caused 100% after 72 h ≥25 IJs/larva with a median lethal concentration 4.99 IJs/larva. Comparison levels induced same EPN indicated that isolates, general, higher than isolates. IJ production T. also was greatest following exposure 100 mean 17,320 Based on production, appears be viable candidate for further study possible development use pest management programs. This indicates naturally coexisting nematode possess different attributes critical their as biocontrol agents.

Antibacterial Activities of Extracellular Metabolites of Symbiotic Bacteria, Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus Isolated from Entomopathogenic Nematodes

Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus are members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, and are engaged in a mutualistic association with the entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema and Heterorhabditis, respectively. In the present study, the organic fraction of ethyl acetate bacterial crude extracts of the symbiotic bacteria, Xenorhabdus stockiae and Photorhabdus luminescens isolated from entomopathogenic ...

Viability and Virulence of Entomopathogenic Nematodes Exposed to Ultraviolet Radiation.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) can be highly effective biocontrol agents, but their efficacy can be reduced due to exposure to environmental stress such as from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Our objectives were to 1) compare UV tolerance among a broad array of EPN species, and 2) investigate the relationship between reduced nematode viability (after exposure to UV) and virulence. Nematodes exp...

I am still carrying on with my research into the molecular mechanisms of memory, currently focusing on the link between CaMKII and AMPA receptors during memory consolidation. But two years ago, funded by the BBSRC, we embarked on an exciting new project, investigating the link between decision-making and learning in Lymnaea. This project uses much less mo...
